Happy Lunar New Year! It is officially the year of the rabbit. Being a family business founded by Chinese-Vietnamese immigrants, Lunar New Year is an important celebration to BSG and we are so excited to share some of the festivities with you. The colour red is important to Lunar New Year as it is a symbol of good fortune, luck and prosperity. During this time, you will see many people who celebrate Lunar New Year wearing red, decorating their homes with red banners and gifting ‘Red Pockets’ with lucky money inside!

You can celebrate the Lunar New Year with BSG by rocking a BSG red on your nails! Like lipstick, we know how daunting choosing a red shade that is flattering to your skin tone can be. Which is why we’ve put together a step-by-step guide to help you determine which BSG Red would look best on you. In today’s guide we will cover and suggest reds that complements your skin colour and tone. Keep in mind that at the end of the day these are only suggestions and you can wear whichever red your heart desires to wear!

HOW TO FIND YOUR BEST RED BASED ON SKIN TONE

A popular method to decide which red will flatter you most is by looking at your skin tone. To determine what your undertone is you can simply look at the colour of your veins.

  • If your veins appear blue or purple in colour then you have a cool undertone
  • If your veins appear blueish-green then you have a neutral undertone
  • If your veins appear green or olive then you have a warm undertone

Another popular way to determine your undertone is the jewelry test.

  • If white silver jewelry tends to look flattering on you then you have a cool undertone
  • If gold and silver jewelry tend to look flattering on you then you have a neutral undertone
  • If yellow good jewelry tends to look flattering on you then you have a warm undertone

Once you’ve figured out your undertone, here are the types of red that complements your skin tone best.

Cool Undertone: cool blue-toned reds will complement you best – try 70 Red Delicious or 169 Valentine

I have not worn red nails in quite a few years. I think I would love the very berry red for valentines. I may have to add a red in my next order.

Definitely Candy Apple is my go to red. I’ve looked for a while to find a red that suits my neutral complexion. I love the bright tone of this red. I agree with this guide and really appreciate the article! Love BSG products.

My go to BSG reds are 129 Candy Apple in the summer and 127 Hollywood in the fall/winter!! I wear these religiously! Can’t go wrong!

Thanks for the insight! Good info for myself and others.

Hmm. I have and enjoy many reds. I get so many positive comments for Garnet! on me while it may be a bit relatively warm on my neutral/cool complexion. These kinds of rules are made to be broken, and one way I will do it is by focusing on skintone contrast over cool/warm & skintone depth matching. So with fair light skin, I might choose Lady Crimson for the contast and tone, or Hollywood even though it’s warmer. With warm deep brown, I might choose Cherry Pie or Spicy, but maybe Cherry Bomb even if more cool. Mind you, Spicy was a personal summer favourite for me to wear, even with the cooler tendency. Some bright corals (orange-pink-red) seem almost universally flattering.

My go to is Mardi Gras but I decided to try Naughty and Nice (dip powder) for Chinese New Year and I love it! I added in some gold glitter on my final dip of color and love the way it looks!

I always thought I had a neutral undertone until I read this, and now I’m pretty sure I actually have a cool undertone! And I also already have “Valentine” so that’ll be the perfect red for me based on this article! Thank you!

I would rock candy apple or red delicious; it’s looking like there’s a common theme of apple red shades for me lol. Thanks for the guide.

I have a neutral/warm undertone. I love the scarlet but all your colours are fabulous.

Super helpful! I’m definitely a 1005 Mary or 125 Candy Apple girl. Happy Lunar New Year everyone!

Mara January 25, 2023

I’m not a red girl (unless it’s lipstick) but I would probably rock Scarlet.

Alexandra Pawlikowski January 25, 2023

I don’t have a go to red but I really like 46Scarlet and 197Grapefruit
