ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: JOHNNY TRAN
On this chapter of Artist Spotlight, we chat with Johnny Tran of Toronto based salon, Hard Rock Nails, about all things nail and career!
Could you tell us why you decided to become a nail professional? What made you want to go into this career?
"At the early age of 16 years old, I did not know what I was going to do as a career yet. One fine day, I was at my mother’s salon and she had asked me to help her with a client- a young lady, with her nail polish application. She [the client] was such a beautiful girl, I knew from the start that I wanted to do nails so I could meet her again haha. At that time, I also saw that the nail industry focused too much into making profits at the cost of quality work and there was a lack of attention to details, therefore I made up my mind and decided to become a nail professional that have a great attention to details."
What is your favourite thing about being a nail professional?
"As a Nail Professional my goal is to give my clients the best nail experience possible because to see a smile on their faces makes me so happy."
As the owner and founder of Hard Rock Nails, what made you want to open your own salon and do you have advice for those who are thinking about starting their own nail business-especially in a competitive city like Toronto?
"After 10+ year in the nail Industry and working for my family nail business, I decided to expand and open Hard Rock Nails to continue growing and learning as an individual. In life, you should never say that you know it all because life is full of surprises. Therefore, my advice to all the people wanting to get into opening a nail salon is to start with love. You must love what you do and continue to learn to perfect your craft then success will come."
You are not just a successful business owner, but also a talented nail artist whose work a lot of people admire. Do you have anyone that you look up too or get inspiration from? Is there anyone that you attribute your success too?
"In today’s nail industry, everyone learns from one another and grows as a whole. Basically, we pick up the trends out there that’s featured in Nails Magazine and Nail Pro Magazine etc. and try to recreate in our style of doing the art or the nail shape itself. Who I really look up to on the business side of things, is someone who is not in the nail industry but is my mentor."
Lastly, what are your top three favourite shades and favourite thing about using BSG?
"I love Bio Seaweed Gel very much and have been using its since day 1! Honestly, there are too many of the BSG polishes that are my favourite but I’m going to name the top three of mine: 12 Tea Party, 271 Tea Cups and 34 Coconut. My favourite thing about using BSG is blending the colours together that makes ombré nail [design]."

Though September is almost over, I looked forward to starting teachers college and celebrating all the special birthdays that take place in the fall. For October I look forward to going apple picking! 😊🍎
I am looking forward to putting up my fall decor, and the pumpkin cream cold brew at Starbucks. It’s my favourite season of the year! So cozy and walking through crunchy leaves is the most satisfying sound!

I was looking forward to the start of school for the kids, and now Im excited for my starter kit to arrive in the mail!
For September, I’ll go apples picking this week. Also going into Fall’s mood so nails will be more into Fall’s nature colours. Wining the full collection would be way more than perfect to begin with this new season :) Happy also that we have more freedom to go out and live again ;)
My birthday month and new colours released on my bday! How crazy! So excited to get some of if not all of the new collection! So excited for cozy sweaters, hot coffee, changing leaves, bundling up, the crunch of the fall leaves when you step on them, and of course fall nails!
